Some Financial Principles for Living and Giving
1. HONOUR THE LORD WITH YOUR WEALTH
(Proverbs 3:9,10; Matthew 6:19-21; Luke 12:16-21; 1 Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-7)
Your giving should be....
CHEERFUL and CONSISTENT - not reluctant or under any sense of compulsion
SYSTEMATIC and SPONTANEOUS - regular and also occasionally riotous and exceptional!
PROPORTIONATE and PRINCIPLED - as God has prospered you and with much faith.
We commend a Tithe as a guide and starting place for your regular giving, but we don’t command it – it is up to you. Anyway, Old Covenant tithing was the floor of Israel’s giving, not the ceiling, and surely we who enjoy New Covenant grace and blessings won’t be motivated to give less.
What does the New Testament teach about money in general?
It is a good servant but a bad Master. You can’t serve God and Money. (Matthew 6:24)
We are stewards of our resources – we are accountable for their use. (Matthew 25:14-30)
Beware the deceitfulness of wealth. (Matthew 13:22)
The love of Money causes wickedness and pain, and distracts disciples. (1 Timothy 6:9-10)
Learn to be content, whether having plenty or not. (Philippians 4:11-13; 1 Timothy 6:6-8)
God loves us to give joyfully and willingly (2 Corinthians 9:7).
2. HAVE A BUDGET FOR YOUR FINANCES AND LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS
We have church members who can offer one to one advice about managing personal finances, and we can also provide specialist Debt advice and support. So please don’t let shame or guilt hinder you from seeking our help. Speak to an Elder if you need any financial advice and help.
3. HAVE A GENEROUS HEART
Beyond regular giving to the ministry and mission of The Coign Church, there will be opportunities for you to give to other mission work and charities. Though we seek to give away over 20% of our church income to various outside ministries, we also sometimes have extra offerings on Sundays for designated ministries or charities, or to support urgent relief work overseas.
There is also much sharing of possessions and giving that occurs week by week within the family of The Coign Church. Such love, care, and generosity builds community and demonstrates authentic Christianity. Play your part in this caring and sharing. (Proverbs 19:17; Isaiah 58:6-10; Matthew 25:34-36; James 1:27).
